Spotswood invitational kicked off the golf season with 14 schools from all over. The young Cats squad came in 4th place. Not our best day but fun and good practice for our big district tourney on Friday. Cole Higgins had a fine day leading the team with a 77. Hit it a mile off the tee and has a chance to score really low this year. Garrett Huffman shot 81 and once he gets rid of that one or two bad holes he could be great. Need to work to get our 3 and 4 scores in the groove. Will McClung shot 91 followed by Cole Cathcart with 92. Very proud of John Shomo in his first big match. Shot 94 and improved 6 shots from front to back nine. Noah Sullivan also played his first big match and shot 109. Once he gets use to playing he will be fine. Good luck Friday men.
Great day for our Wildcat Golf team at Ironwood CC today. Beat all six Valley District schools to start the district season off 6-0. Fort was 2nd, followed by Broadway, Spotswood, TA, Harrisonburg and Waynesboro. Cole Higgins was the tournament medalist with a 74. Cole had 6 birdies and has been a real leader as the teams only senior. Garrett Huffman shot 84, Will McClung 88, Cole Cathcart 89. Aaron Plogger played his first ever high school match and shot 99. Aaron gets better everyday and John Shomo shot 100. Team plays an Invitational Monday at London Downs CC. GO WILDCATS.
24 teams today at the Heritage Invitational and the Cats finished 7th. Garrett Huffman shot 76, Cole Higgins 79, Will McClung 85, Cole Cathcart 93 and John Shomo 97. Got to get a 4th score in the next few weeks so we can make a run to Regions.
Wildcat Golf team competed at Heritage Oaks CC in Harrisonburg in a 4 team match. For District purposes we were only playing Turner Ashby and the Cats came out on top and are now 7-0 in the league. Harrisonburg and Waynesboro also played and the Cats won those 2 matches also but they didn't count towards district. Cole Higgins with a 37 and Garrett Huffman with 38 lead the team to victory. Both continue to play well and are working hard to get even better. Will McClung shot 44 and Cole Cathcart 45 to round out the scoring for a total of 164. Garrett Huffman lead the team and took medalist honors with 38 followed by Cole Higgins 39, Cole Cathcart 42 and Will McClung 43 for a team score of 162. Cats also had Aaron Plogger stepping up with 44. We need to keep improving and get our 9 hole total down to mid 150's. Need to get under 320 for 18 if we want to reach our team goals. Harrisonburg shot 180 with low golfer scoring 41.
Wildcat Golf did it again. In a tourney with all 7 district teams the Cats came in 1st place taking their record to 14-0. Cole Higgins lead the team and tourney scoring 75 on the par 72 Waynesboro CC. Fort was 2nd, Harrisonburg 3rd, followed by Spotswood, Turner Ashby, and then a tie between Waynesboro and Broadway. Garrett Huffman shot 81, Will McClung 91, John Shomo 94, Cole Cathcart 94, Aaron Plogger 100. We need to keep improving and get ready for Regions in late September.
Well it had to happen at some point. The Wildcats struggled today on our home course and lost our first district match of the year. Cats are now 14-1 and after Fort Defiance win today they moved to 13-2. Cats are still in first place but this made things more interesting going into the final part of the season. Cats will meet Fort one more time in the 3rd 18 hole tourney. Wildcats won the first two and that is how Fort got its to loses. Team is still in the drivers seat but this makes things more fun come the last big tourney on Sept. 17. Christian Michael of Fort had a great day scoring 33 - Garrett Huffman of Rockbridge was 2nd with 38. Garrett is a very steady, level header golfer and can't wait to see how good he ends up being down the road. Fort shot 157 and Cats 168. Also for the Cats - Cole Higgins 41, John Shomo 44, Cole Cathcart 45. Strong showing for Shomo and look forward to seeing what he shots tomorrow. Watch out for Higgins tomorrow - got a feeling he will go under par!
Wildcat Golf team was back in form today posting a 156 to beat the Waynesboro score of 186. Cole Higgins was strong all day and shot 36 followed closely by Garrett Huffman with 38. Great job from our two leaders as they continue to play well. Cole Cathcart was in fine form but had a few bad breaks late to shot a strong 40 and Will McClung was solid with 42. John Shomo 44 and Noah Sullivan 47 also both had good days. Time to keep grinding and this team still has some fight in them. Go Cats!
Cole Cathcart and two Spotswood golfers shot 39 on the par 36 lake course at Lakeview today to share medalist honors. So proud and happy for Cole. He has worked hard to get back to his game and it is starting to come together. Spotswood shot 162 and the Wildcats shot 167 in a fun, competitive match. Cole Higgins overcame a really difficult start and shot 41 followed by Garrett Huffman 42 and 45 from both John Shomo and Will McClung. One more 9 hole match at home Tuesday and then time to get ready for District and Region tourneys.
Wasn't easy but the golf team did it again. Valley District Champs. The Cats edge Fort Defiance by 1 shot and finished the season 21-3 and Fort was 2nd at 19-5. Spotswood was 3rd at 16-8 followed by Harrisonburg, Turner Ashby, Broadway and Waynesboro. Today's final 18 hole tourney was held at Heritage Oaks Country Club. Harrisonburg had a great day and shot 332 followed by RCHS at 336, Fort 337, Spotswood 338. Lots of fun. Great to win the hardware. Senior Cole Higgins and sophomore Garrett Huffman made the 6 member All District team. Wet conditions and high rough but challenging and long. Time for Regions. Love these guys! Hasn't been easy and they have had to fight but that is what makes this year special.
